Non-stop NAGA November!

Time for NNN (Non-stop NAGA November)! Okay, sorry… that probably wasn’t a great joke… Nonetheless, the intention is there. For the month of November, I will attempt to play 100 games and review them all on NAGA afterwards on stream!

Let’s start with why I decided to do this. First, people who know me personally know that I hate playing online with a burning passion. If I want to continue improving in mahjong, there is a necessity to grind many games to improve. Playing online is one of the quickest platforms to access and the ability to constantly play games whenever and wherever is how many new players in the North American mahjong scene have appeared out of nowhere and look so strong. To be honest, I have no idea how I cultivated this adversity towards playing online, but now is the time to start tackling it. The following are common questions people may have.

Why NAGA?

NAGA’s training data uses play data from the strongest players in the game and is currently the most established mahjong AI. Additionally, I enjoy the fact that there are several models that play the game in a different style.

Why 100 games?

That’s because NAGA has a 100 hanchan subscription plan. I thought that would be a pretty good benchmark for how many games I should play.

What are your goals?

There are several goals that I have in mind where I’ll probably make a half month check-in post where I’ll see how I’ve done.

  1. Get used to playing online.
  2. Get out of eternal 3d (I used to play online for fun only) and try to get near 5d.
  3. Get faster at making decisions and avoid running out of time as much as possible (Tenhou 5+10 timer).
  4. Take away as much as possible from NAGA.

Very minute detailed goals include:

  1. Be able to discard read more quickly. Hopefully within 3 seconds.
  2. Evaluate the current state of my push-fold judgment. Side note: I think I fold too much.
  3. Be able to better understand how NAGA works by using it directly to constantly review my own gameplay.
  4. Find flaws in my current gameplay and aim to correct them.

When will you stream?

First stream will start October 31st 7 PT/10 ET (it’s already November in Japan). I plan on streaming everyday when possible.

How many games (hanchans) are you playing per stream?

The current plan is to log review after finishing every hanchan. Thus, roughly four to five hanchans per day plus log reviews afterwards. On weekends, I might try to go longer.

Where can I find you streaming?
